Encourage EU Dialogue in Egypt

EU leaders condemned the violence that occurred in Cairo, Egypt. They assess if the Egyptian regime continues to use violence against demonstrators in Cairo, the Egyptian would lose international credibility.

Previously the EU had been criticized for hiding behind the President of the United States, Barack Obama, and distanced himself from the Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak. Responding to such criticism, British Prime Minister David Cameron challenged his fellow European leaders to take a stronger position.

David Cameron explains the steps taken by the Egyptian government so far has failed to meet the aspirations of the people of Egypt. "If we see violence on the streets of Cairo today with a state-sponsored hiring demonstrators, the Egyptian regime lost all credibility and support in the eyes of the world, including the UK," said David Cameron as reported by the Associated Press, Friday, February 4, 2011.

EU leaders gather in Brussels in the European Union summit. The leaders called for national dialogue between the Egyptian government with the opposition. This attitude is contrary to the attitude of U.S. President Barack Obama who called for Hosni Mubarak to step down.

The critics assess the European Union fear in supporting pro-democracy demonstrations since the European Union has close ties with Egypt, which joined in the alliance of other Mediterranean countries.
