EU urges Egypt Protect Journalists


The number of international journalists who were attacked by supporters of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt when covering crisis makes infuriated some leaders of countries in Europe. One protest leader who was Prime Minister of Sweden who urge Egypt to protect the serious journalists who are covering.

Swedish Prime Minister, John Fredrik Reinfeldt, who represent the leaders in Egypt, asked the authorities in Egypt to protect journalists who were covering the demonstrations for democracy. This was followed by a Swedish television journalist was stabbed from behind while being covered.

"Journalists are the eyes and ears of the world today to proclaim this event," Reinfeldt said in a meeting of the European Union in Brussels, Friday, February 4, 2011.

SVT television reporter, Bert Sundström attacked by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak while covering demonstrations in the street. According to television station SVT, Sundström disappeared from the hotel where he stayed on Thursday afternoon, and when a call from a man speaking Arabic, said his Sundström was in the hands of the Egyptian government.

Committee to Protect Journalists notes that 24 journalists were arrested, 21 journalists became victims of the attack and there were five cases where the equipment for the coverage held in the next 24 hours. They included representatives of The Washington Post and The New York Times and Al-Jazeera.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Lene Espersen was surprised by the number of international journalists report that attack. Lene asked the Egyptian government should be responsible.

"We see patterns in last week's dramatic developments in Egypt, where freedom of expression has been deliberately suppressed. We can never accept it," he said.
