United States (U.S.) had suggested that the Bollywood film stars could be deployed to help stabilize Afghanistan from the devastation of war. That's because many Afghans infatuated with Indian films.

So said the British daily, The Guardian, quoting information that is claimed to come from U.S. diplomatic memo that leaked WikiLeaks. The memo was associated with instructions from Washington to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi to look for specific ideas and concrete for India to exert the influence of non-physical [soft power] in helping the reconstruction in Afghanistan.

In a memo sent in March 2007, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and then propose that exert Bollywood seems to be a good idea. Bollywood is the popular name for an area of the Indian film industry in the city of Mumbai (formerly known as onions). Region was deliberately given a name similar to the center for Bollywood films in America, Hollywood.

"We understand that Bollywood films are very popular in Afghanistan, so that the Indian media personalities who are interested can be asked a trip to Afghanistan to help gives attention to social issues there,"according to the memo, published excerpts of The Guardian, Friday, December 17, 2010 .

The idea was, until now, never materialized. However, it signifies the idea that the U.S. helped India to rely in part to stabilize Afghanistan, a war raged for years, ranging from the attack of the Soviet Union, Civil War, until the war against terrorism and the Taliban when the U.S. invaded that country in late 2001.

India has been helping rebuild Afghanistan from the fury of war. However, according to the memo, the U.S. realized that the magnitude of the influence of India to Afghanistan could lead to obstruction of another U.S. ally in the war on terrorism, Pakistan. The reason is, India and Pakistan are politically still hostile.
